Will To Power

At the time of Nietzsche, the philosophers of the world were looking for the driver of life.

What drives life, what is the underlying idea that propels its actions.

After Darwin discovered evolution, we decided to accept his view of our driver; to reproduce and survive.

But Nietzsche had his own theory; the Will to Power.

Power not like our modern view, not as a tool to direct and influence the behaviour of others.

Rather this power that Nietzsche discusses is similar to capacity within a domain, your wherewithal of a domain.

This is the athlete getting faster, the musician getting better, the writer improving their vocabulary.

This power is your competence within a domain, your ability to excel within the domain.

It is this that Nietzsche argues all life is pushing towards.

So how is this useful for us?

Well, you now know what actions will heighten your fulfillment as an entity of life.

If your actions can heighten your power within a domain then they will heighten fulfillment.

Thus, our life becomes an endless process of striving.

Endlessly pushing just past our old limits to create new ones, thus expanding our capacity within our domains.

This idea provides us with a mental framework that allows dopamine to be released throughout your work, not just before it or after it. (Andrew Huberman for more on dopamine)

It provides you a necessity for flow state, that the task is slightly harder than your present abilities. (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi for more on flow)

So then we must strive within our domains. Whatever you like to do, increasing your capacity within that domain will heighten your fulfillment.

“What is good? All that heightens the feeling of power, the will to power, power itself in man. …Not contentment, but more power.” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
