An idea of a static self has seeped into modern thought.
This idea manifests in sentences like: "That is just the way I am", "I am just not that type of person", "I could NEVER do that, that isn't who I am".
These sentences can be used to prevent oneself from foul actions but are too often used to justify staying in comfort zones. When the latter is true it is to say that 'I am the final version of myself and refuse to leave familiarity to find out if that is true'. This idea of a static self is a childish attempt to stay safe in the known.
This static self is an underdeveloped self, it is a self that does not know its limits because it has not tested to find them. It is a self unacquainted with itself since exploring the unknown was deemed too scary.
This denial of the reality of a constantly developing self is holding people in underdeveloped and sometimes even childlike states.
The counter to a static self is the self under constant development, that embraces the unknown. A self that knows not itself, but eagerly seeks to find it. A self that embraces challenge as the path to its limits, and thus itself.
We must recognize that most of our potential and selves lay dormant.
So, go out, seek challenge, seek adversity, establish your latent potentials, build yourself up, burn your deadwood, and rise again and again like the phoenix in your lifelong journey of self-actualization.
You are not static my friends. You are a fraction of what you could be, so go out and find out who you can be.
