Logos, Eros & Thumos

Plato saw the soul of man as a chariot with Thumos and Eros as our stallions and Logos our charioteer.

This is a perfect allegory for the soul, two wild stallions; our desires and spirit, led by our reason.

This is how man's soul should appear to him, but peer into the souls of the masses you'll find a Logos (reason) that can barely control a rampaging Eros (desires).

As Eros drags Logos around, Logos grows weary and rejects his arduous job by turning to suppressants, i.e. dopamine, and/or just regular, addictions.

And where is Thumos? Incapacitated by Eros.

So let's take stock; rampaging desires, a checked-out reason, and an incapacitated spirit, DAMN IT!

Firstly, we need to stop being dragged by Eros.

This community often fixes this through a dopamine detox. You know damn well you need to have a detox… so... just… COMMIT, DAMN IT!

Now after calming Eros down, Logos will come back to work, he just needs direction.

For this there is a simple fix; for a full week, dedicate an hour a day to clearly envisioning what your highest aspiration is. Write every step, visualize it thoroughly, get invigorated by it, think about it when the sun rises and as it sets… just… COMMIT, DAMN IT!

Now Eros is calm, Logos has direction and Thumos just needs some repairs.

Thumos is the least familiar part of this framework to the masses, for the last generation of high Thumos men died on the beaches of Normandy.

So let's feed this great stallion of yours. What does he eat? Victory, Glory, Honour, and Recognition.

The easiest way to get these is at the gym. You'll get victories with the closure of every set, and you'll get recognition amongst men when you acquire a physique.

More generally, if you want to feed your Thumos endure the daunting. Make your peace a victory and your Thumos will be well nourished.

But truthfully, you already knew all of this, you knew you needed a dopamine detox, you knew you needed to pick a direction and you know you need to be in the gym, all I have done is provided you with a clear framework.

So… just… COMMIT, DAMN IT!
