    Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers is a French historical adventure novel first published in 1844. Set in 17th century France, it follows the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan as he strives to join the Musketeers of the Guard. Along the way, he befriends three of the most formidable musketeers of the age, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, and becomes embroiled in affairs of state and court. The novel also highlights the injustices and absurdities of the Ancien RĂ©gime, making it politically significant at the time of its publication. The story continues in Twenty Years After and The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later. Alexandre Dumas co-wrote the novel with Auguste Maquet, who also worked on its sequels, as well as The Count of Monte Cristo.
